Events Management 2012 Entry

Honours Degree

Whether it’s celebrating local culture or showcasing the world’s elite athletes, the world of events is a challenging and exciting one.

By studying for an events management degree, you’d be joining a department with 15 years experience in teaching the subject set within a region that enjoys a rich heritage in holding festivals, so there's plenty of opportunity to gain valuable experience within the industry.

You will gain valuable practical work experience in the events industry as you’ll be required to run at least one event early on in your studies. In your third year you will then be required to complete a 48 week placement in the events industry. This will enable you to put your theory into practice, make useful contacts in the industry and could even lead to employment after you graduate.

Our events management degree course ensures you acquire a broad overview of the industry covering subjects such as financial management, marketing, risk management and corporate strategy. It can be studied on its own as a single honours degree, or you can opt to study the programme combined with a range of subjects. For single honours students, there is the opportunity to specialise in three areas: music and cultural events, sporting events or business events.

I worked alongside top Event Managers and was given parts of large-scale events to organise on my own, such as working on the London Marathon. The experience I gained on this incredible placement will certainly set me above the rest when looking for a graduate job.

I chose to come to this university because not only was it one of the universities that had been teaching Events Management for the longest but, in addition, I attended an Open Day which outshone all of my experiences at other universities. At the Open Day, I was able to meet the head of department and some lecturers and see the wealth of knowledge and experience that would be influencing my future education. The students who were working at the Open Day, the SU president and lecturers showed me what a brilliant and friendly place this would be to study at.
I believe that the course has given me the crucial background and knowledge to succeed in the events industry.   It is brilliant to have lots of experience, however there are so many other factors that need to be taken into consideration. You need to have an understanding of, eg,  financial and legal issues and if you have talented lecturers, you can learn an incredible amount that will give you an edge against other event managers in the workplace.
In my third year, I had a 52-week work placement at Shelter, the national housing and homeless charity.  I worked alongside top Event Managers and was given parts of large-scale events to organise on my own, such as working on the London Marathon.  The experience I gained on this incredible placement was second to none and will certainly set me above the rest when looking for a graduate job.
I have been lucky enough to have been involved with a great deal of other activities outside of my academic studies. I was president for the Leisure, Tourism, Hospitality and Events Society (Parked Elephant), a member and social secretary for the university rowing team and a member of the university dance team.  I have had the opportunity to be involved in events, big and small, with the different teams as well as make many new friends!
The University of Gloucestershire has supported me all the way through my higher education and has helped me to become the person I am today and the graduate I will be tomorrow. Whether it is through talking with lecturers, placement visits or simply being a part of a sports team and society, I know that I chose the best place to study!  I have experienced people teaching me everyday, access to as many events as I can work on and the opportunity to live in a beautiful location, Cheltenham, what more can you ask for?
