Matthew’s role as COO (PVC Student Experience) encompasses Libraries & Student Support, Student Wellbeing, Sport & Physical Wellbeing, Academic Registry, Health, Safety, & Environment, Estates, and IT. He is also Secretary to Council and the institutional lead for internationalisation.

Biography

Matthew has an extensive career in university leadership. Prior to his current role, Matthew was Academic Registrar and Director of Academic and Student Affairs at Oxford Brookes University. He started his career at Durham University where he held various posts including Director of the Graduate School and Director of Undergraduate Recruitment.

Matthew has served on the executives of numerous professional associations in the UK, and at present he is a member of the executive of the Association of Heads of University Administration (AHUA). His interest in contemporary higher education policy and practice includes having served as a member of the editorial boards for three professional journals in the UK, USA, and Australia.

Matthew has a fascination for the history of universities as well as the contemporary sector and is the author of ‘Universities in the Age of Reform, 1800 – 1870: Durham, London, and King’s College’.
