English and Creative Writing

I'm a specialist in Shakespeare studies and I'm particularly interested in what his plays meant at the time they were written and how they were performed on his own stage.

Biography

I became hooked on Shakespeare in my second year as a student at Glasgow University when I was asked to write an essay on one of his sonnets. I continued with this when I became a research student, but then ended up mostly teaching his plays because they are more popular on University courses. From there I branched out into the works of his contemporaries, and I always teach this material in ways that make it as accessible as possible given that they died four hundred years ago.
