Apprenticeship Details

This apprenticeship has been designed for talented career entrants and those looking to develop in management roles.

Outline

The Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA) has been designed to give learners knowledge and skills that they can relate to their organisations and utilise in the workplace.

The academic programme is delivered over three years and a learner completing this will receive a BA(Hons) Management and Leadership degree. Once the degree has been awarded, an 'end point assessment' is compulsory in Year 4 in order to complete the degree apprenticeship qualification.

There is an emphasis on real world problems throughout, meaning our teaching approach is focused on learner engagement in activities and tasks, rather than formal lectures.

Delivery

Modules are delivered as blocks of learning - at the end of each block, apprentices must submit an assessment before they can undertake the next. This helps learners to maintain a work / life balance, whilst also ensuring progression through the programme.

Assessments reflect the varied nature of a business professional's work - for example, learners are required to write reports, give presentations and undertake business planning. There are also examinations and reflective assessments.

Modules

In Year 1 (Level 4), we give learners a first opportunity to engage with academic work in order to produce academic content to a higher standard than expected at A-level study. In addition, at this level apprentices develop an understanding of key business areas, such as finance and marketing.

Learners also undertake a number of personal and professional development projects. For example, The Personal and Professional Portfolio module enables learners to develop the skills required to become an effective manager.

Year 1 Modules
Year 1 Modules
Applied Business Project is designed to help apprentices develop the skills required for academic writing and research. During this module, learners are introduced to the concept of secondary research and have the opportunity to undertake a piece of research based on their own organisation (or one they know), using academic literature, theory and analytical tools and models.
Academic and Professional Development is designed to provide apprentices with the opportunity to develop the personal and professional skills required to become an effective manager. It does this by providing a three distinct blocks of learning and practical experience: academic skills; digital business skills; developing a professional portfolio.
Organisational Behavior in Practice aims to analyse the organisation's internal environment, focusing on the functional activities and the interactions that occur within this setting.
The Business Environment and the Organisation introduces some elementary concepts of the business organisation. This module examines the interaction between the external environment and business organisations, with a focus on the political, legal, economic and socio-cultural environmental factors at the international, national and industry levels.
Business and the Legal System introduces learners to the English Legal System and Contract Law. Topics include: the distinction between civil and criminal law; the court system; the essentials of a binding contract; contract terms; vitiating factors affecting contracts; ways in which a contract can be discharged; remedies for breach of contract.
Introduction to Marketing Principles explores the philosophy and first principles of that underpin marketing. It introduces the fundamental tools required by an organisation to provide a superior customer value proposition vis-á-vis its competitors.
Introduction to Business and Financial Information explores many forms of data - financial and non- financial - and its effective use in organisations. Learners explore the difference between raw data and information, and how information aids the decision-making process within organisations.

In Year 2 (Level 5) learners engage further with quality academic work by applying theoretical knowledge in their writing. Apprentices are also required to appreciate and apply a range of related concepts and theories to business management problems in a critical and considered manner.

Personal and professional development continues through the use of reflective logs, engagement with businesses / business professionals and through assessments designed to develop learners' skills (eg. presentation skills, negotiating skills and analysis skills).

Year 2 Modules
Year 2 Modules
Operations Management examines the concepts and practicalities of running a modern business operation. It will provide learners with exposure to operational business issues to form a base of knowledge for other modules in the business management field. The module provides a content and context for apprentices to prepare a valid research plan and undertake a project in response to a business management problem.
Professional Development will enable learners to develop an understanding of themselves in relation to the skills required for successful professional and personal development within management.
Applied Human Resource Management (HRM) evaluates the human resource management function, provides insight in to the relationship between HRM and other business functions, and enables learners to examine how human resource related information informs a manager's decision making process.
Leadership within Organisations looks at the nature of leadership and distinguishes between leadership and management.
Marketing Decision Making introduces learners to a systematic approach to marketing decision-making, using a planning framework. With the aid of contemporary theory and case studies, the module will explore each stage in the marketing planning process - from appraising the firm's current situation, through to objective setting; and formulating and evaluating alternative marketing strategies and making them operational via an integrated marketing mix. Learners will be encouraged to explore the practical application of concepts and techniques in a variety of marketing contexts and to reflect on their usefulness.
Business in the International Setting enables learners to analyse the impact of external environmental factors (such as culture, financial systems, entry barriers and technological developments) and risk factors which affect the policies, operations and strategies of private, public and third sector organisations in various parts of the world. The module will seek to build on apprentices' understanding of the international business environment, which they will have developed in previous parts of their programs.
Accounting and Finance Management in Business will give future business managers from any specialist area the tools they will need to make informed management decisions and to communicate effectively with finance specialists. It will focus on techniques for measuring and managing business performance, making effective and informed decisions, and reporting to stakeholders.

In Year 3 (Level 6) learners are required to draw upon all their studies to date, as well as practical experience gained in the workplace. Apprentices are challenged to consider the importance of differences and diverse cultures in business management, issues of ethics and governance, and the wider responsibilities of business management.

Apprentices must also complete a final year project with a consultancy focus, where they are required to build strategies to address genuine challenges facing their business, as well as maximise commercial opportunities.

Year 3 Modules
Work Based Consultancy Project will provide learners with an in-depth understanding of the issues involved in undertaking in-depth academic research in the management and leadership fields. This will culminate in an individual piece of research related to a topic.
Continuous Professional Development provides knowledge and understanding of the increasing importance of critical reflection and continuous professional development when managing a career. It is designed to build upon work experiences, including an analysis of critical incidents and an evaluation of the skills and attitudes required for effective working and career progression in leadership and management roles.
Innovations in Strategic Marketing provides opportunities for learners to specify and justify innovative strategic marketing solutions. Issues addressed include: the product market in which the business is to compete, level of marketing investment, functional area strategies to compete in the selected product market, and the strategic assets or competencies that underlie the strategy and provide the sustainable competitive advantage.
Strategic Financial Management aims to provide learners with a strategic understanding and appreciation of financial markets, the sources of finance and the cost of capital, capital investment appraisals, risk and valuation of shares and companies. The module aims to give learners a balance of skills and knowledge, including skills in applying quantitative techniques; the ability to interpret and explain the results of these calculations; the ability to critically evaluate the techniques and the capacity to relate.
Change Management in Organisations is about the management of change. Learners will be encouraged to reflect critically on the nature and process of change in organisations. The module will focus on the strategic aspects of organisational change, using examples from the private sector, public sector and third sector. Finally, apprentices will explore different levels of corporate decision-making and affected groups and individuals.
Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Intrapreneurship in Business encourages learners to take a holistic view of innovation processes in multiple contexts, particularly SMEs, product and service innovation, process innovation, and innovation in the marketplace.
Strategic Analysis and Direction provides learners with an understanding of strategic management principles, theory and analytical frameworks. These are then applied to industry to consider how organisations can manage their resources and competition in order to achieve long term competitive advantage.

End Point Assessment

This EPA assessment process is comprised of two 'gateways' and requires the apprentice to present the results of their final year project, along with evidence of their professional development in the form of a learning portfolio.

Entry requirements

Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their Apprenticeships. Most candidates will have A levels (or equivalent) or existing relevant Level 3 qualifications, and English, Maths and ICT at Level 2. Other relevant or prior experience may also be considered as an alternative. English and Maths must be achieved before the End Point Assessment

Apprentices should be in fulltime employment (e.g. at least employed for 30 hours per week) throughout the duration of their apprenticeship, and 20% of their working hours should be spent on off-the-job training.

Funding

There is good news for organisations of all sizes. Larger employers can utilise their Apprenticeship Levy to fund this apprenticeship (Levy funding has to be used within 24 months or it is lost to the employer). For employers with a payroll of less than £3m, there is funding support available (see below for more information).

Fewer than 50 employees where the apprentice is 16-18 years old No cost to employer - government funded. Incentive payment of £1,000 for taking on an under 19 year old.
Non-Levy paying employers - payroll is less than £3m. Government funds 90%. Incentive payment of £1,000 for taking on an under 19 year old.
Levy paying employers - payroll is greater than £3m. Comes out of the Levy pot.
