Brief Description

This module aims to analyse the organisations internal environment and the management activities that take place.      It is designed to develop an understanding of theory, practice and policies of management activities of the wider organisation and the people within it, in a variety of modern organisational contexts    It does this by encouraging the development of students as critical, skilled, ethical and professional participants in their own development as potential managers.

Indicative Syllabus

The syllabus will cover three themes:

1. Managing the internal organisation.

      Management & leadership ideas

Management of change

Culture, politics, power and influence


2. Managing people within the internal organisation

People as individuals within organisations

People and teams & networks within organisations

Approaches to managing performance & motivation, focussing on job design and results


3. The individual in organisations

Skills needed to develop as an effective employee and managers within organisations

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to

1.      Identify and analyse a wide variety of management activities within a variety of organisational types. (PLO 1)

2.      Examine the principal internal management activities necessary to manage organisations in competitive environments. (PLO 1)

3.      Understand the concepts, theories and policies relating to the sustainable and ethical management and leadership of a range of employee groups in a range of organisations.  (PLO 2)

4.      Demonstrate an understanding of the interface between the organisations’ management, leadership, people and performance  (PLO2 PLO 3)

5.      Assess the impact of a range of management activities on organisations and the people within those organisations. (PLO 2) 

6.Demonstrate an essential people management skill set for working both as an individual and as a member of a team at different levels, across networks within an organisation.(PLO4 PLO5)
