Brief Description

This module provides an opportunity for students initially to explore comparative economic/business approaches in different regions of the globe, and subsequently to engage in a detailed investigation of one selected region.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will build on the understanding of the international business environment gained at level 4 and begin with an investigation of the key characteristics of European and emerging market private sector economic development.

The opportunity will then be provided for students to undertake a detailed investigation of a regional business context, looking at such elements as trade and competition policies, FDI and industrial policies, political/financial risk and other factors in economic development.

Finally, students will be encouraged to analyse the various challenges presented to the managerial values and practices of their chosen region by contemporary economic, technological and commercial developments.

This module will incorporate an active pedagogical style requiring full attendance and active participation by students.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Correctly apply appropriate analytical frameworks to evaluate the current and potential economic and political factors likely to impact on the Foreign Direct Investment decisions of major multinational companies. (PLO 2 and 4)
  2. Demonstrate a high level of understanding of both the economic and political characteristics of industrially developed regions and emerging markets.  (PLO 2 and 3)
  3. Identify ways in which these conditions are addressed by the strategies and operations of multinational companies and make appropriate recommendations supported by evidence. (PLO 1 and 3)
  4. Evaluate the relative merits of selected theoretical frameworks and critically reflect on how these shape our understanding of the business environment. (PLO 4)
  5. Work effectively with others in the preparation of group presentations and discussions. (PLO 5)
  6. Communicate effectively in writing for assignments and orally through group discussions and presentations.  (PLO 6)
