Brief Description

This module introduces the core concepts of computers and security by considering the design and operation of computers and computer networks, the implications of security and how computers may be programmed.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will study computer hardware: processors, memory and storage devices; Networking hardware: switches and local area networks; routers and wide area networks; Networking protocols and protocol stacks. Students will have an introduction to computer programming: expressions, statements, files, and pattern-matching in various languages and operating systems. The introduction of computer security, data recovery, and forensic investigative techniques will form the foundation for further study of Forensic Computing at levels 5 and 6.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the component parts of modern computer hardware, and how they might serve as sources of digital evidence.
  2. Carry out assembly language programming tasks in both low- and high-level languages.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the components of modern computer networks, and how they might serve as sources of digital evidence.
  4. Carry out local and wide area network construction projects.
  5. Develop computer programs that may be used for collecting digital evidence.
  6. Understand the security issues associated with networked computer systems.
