Brief Description

The module affords the opportunity to further the computer graphics work undertaken at level 4 or 5 by investigating various methods of integrating 3D models with live action digital video using industry standard visual effects tools and techniques.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will cover related VFX and games industry issues such as computer generated images (CGI), digital video formats, compositing, animation matching, camera tracking, rotoscoping and chromakey techniques. Students will have the opportunity to develop their 3D skills and integrate them with live action elements shot on digital video working from a client brief. Additionally, they will critically analyze the effectiveness of methods utilized.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. synthesise significant issues relating to visual effects.
  2. evaluate the practical and theoretical concerns of 3D graphics for realistic rendering,
  3. use appropriate project planning methodologies for managing the CGI integration process,
  4. be able to develop complex 3D models or effects and composite them effectively with live video elements,
  5. critically assess techniques utilised when integrating CGI, visual effects with live video and present the research using Harvard referencing,
  6. apply skills relevant for academic progression and career development within the sector.
