Brief Description

The unit aims to develop the students’ subject and professional knowledge in primary languages (including inter-cultural understanding), as well as examine whole school approaches related to ethos, policy; teaching practice; assessment and monitoring; meeting the needs of all children; reflection and evaluation; the monitoring of standards and quality of subject provision.

Indicative Syllabus
Learning Outcomes

A student completing this unit should be able to:

  1. demonstrate secure knowledge and understanding of the current statutory National Curriculum/non-statutory frameworks for the primary phase
  2. demonstrate secure knowledge and understanding of how children learn languages
  3. demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to identify and address individual learning needs, and to support children to overcome misconceptions and barriers to learning within primary languages
  4. apply their knowledge and understanding to planning and assessment within primary languages to enable all children to make good progress in language learning
  5. critically evaluate a range of teaching and learning approaches and their own teaching in order to improve their practice and outcomes for children
