Foundation Degree
This course will provide professional training in counselling studies to equip you with the skills, knowledge and understanding for your professional practice.
Who is the course for?
The course is suitable for those who wish to train as professional counsellors. Students will have some prior experience of using counselling skills either in a paid or voluntary setting.
What will I do on the course?
Modules may include
• Skills Development and Practice
• Continuing Personal and Professional Development
• Client Work and Supervision (Work based practice)
• Theoretical Approaches to Counselling
• Awareness of Ethics, Equality and Diversity
• Life Span Development
• Working with Loss and Grief
• Understanding Mental Health
• An Introduction to Research
• You will be required to undertake a helping placement during stage one of the course for a minimum of two hours a week.
• A week's summer school (Year 2) normally includes options:
• Art therapy, Dance movement therapy, Creative writing for therapeutic purposes
• In the second stage of the course you must complete 150 hours of supervised one-to-one client work with a recognised agency
Entry Requirements
You will need:
Students usually need one or more of the following
• 140 UCAS points
• Access to Higher Education Diploma
• Some experience needed of using counselling skills, paid or voluntary setting
• Satisfactory CRB disclosure required
• Overseas students must have IELTS 6.0 or equivalent
You would also normally have:
• 5 GCSEs A*-C or equivalent including Maths and English
What could I do next?
Upon successful completion you may progress to a top-up year at the University of Gloucestershire or at another university for a relevant Honours Degree.
Other options include
• Work as a qualified counsellor with an enhanced agency/employer or in private practice
• Continue with further counselling studies/training
• Use enhanced counselling skills in another professional role
