Journalism

Jonathan joined the university in 2017. He gained a PhD in Journalism Studies in 2012 from Cardiff University, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Between 2007 and 2017 he worked as a lecturer and researcher at Cardiff University's School of Journalism, Media, and Culture. Alongside his teaching he worked as part of an ESRC funded media analysis post Edward Snowden leaks which exposed government mass surveillance. Jonathan also worked on an AHRC collaborative research project with a Cardiff based community news website into how they could best engage their audience, and a BBC Trust funded project examining BBC impartiality in news coverage.

Biography

Jonathan teaches across a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate modules including: Journalism in Context; Sport, Celebrity, and Society; History, Ethics and Sport; Sports Media Relations; Ethics, Censorship and Regulation; Sports and Celebrity Communications; Dissertation / Final Year Dissertation; and Major Project: Media Communications & PR.

Research

Alongside his teaching his current research work includes studying football fan protests, the use of football related clickbait on social media by major media organisations, the implications of gambling sponsorship on football culture, and constructions of nationalism among ‘proper football men’. The fundamental premise at the heart of his research is to use sport as a way of explaining the major issues impacting upon society. Jonathan sits on the editorial board of the Football Collective whose aim is to bring critical debate to football. His  book Protest Campaigns, Media and Political Opportunities was published by Rowman & Littlefield International 2016.
