Postgraduate Certificate/Postgraduate Diploma/MSc
The MSc in Computing (Information Security) provides you with the technical understanding and management skills required to ensure the security of data and networked systems.
The aim of this course is to provide a practical introduction to information assurance. The course-specific modules are taught with reference to the different security roles and domains identified by the new Certification for IA Specialists recently developed by the UK government organisation, CESG. The modules provide a good foundation for the new certification. They have two components, first outlining threats to security, which may be external, from malicious software or hackers, as well as internal from disgruntled employees or simply a failure to back-up. The second component shows how these threats can be countered by appropriate security policies and technologies.
We also focus on professional IT project management, database management, ethical and quality issues, the human computer interface and research methods, providing you with a broad and well-balanced perspective.
The course aims to prepare you for a career in data and IT security management. Many of our students already work in the industry and come to us to gain relevant qualifications. We encourage you to build on any previous expertise, perhaps using it as a basis for particular projects or your dissertation.
We start from the basics with an introductory two-week intensive foundation in programming, databases and computer architecture as well as MSc level study skills. Certificate level modules build on this and are fast-paced and demanding.
There are four related MSc computing programmes. The structure of the programmes is designed to be flexible so that you can easily change from one to another, depending on choice of option module.
