Professional Media Practice

Build Your Own MA

This programme, developed by the media industry and Skillset in conjunction with universities that have been awarded Skillset Media Academy status, is aimed at media professionals who want to develop new skills and knowledge or update their practice. Also known as Build Your Own MA It is made up of a series of modules run as credit bearing short courses. The courses are offered by Skillset Media Academies, including the University of Gloucestershire and  are industry-focused and flexible training for staff and freelancers with prior experience in the Creative Media Industries.

All of these media short courses provide continuing professional development and offer postgraduate credits towards an award. You can take them individually or in combination with a tailored selection of other courses across the Skillset Media Academy Network to achieve a recognised qualification, ranging from a Postgraduate Certificate to an MA in Professional Media Practice. You can also take these courses as a means to gain new knowledge and skills without submitting an assignment for credits.

Skillset Media Academies are a network of colleges and universities across the UK that work with industry to provide continuous professional development (CPD) for media professionals and to develop future leaders and innovators in the creative industries. The Skillset Media Academies run a diverse range of bite-sized courses across England.

Modules

How do the courses work?

The courses consist of a 2 day block where you have intensive training and study at the Media Academy, followed by a period of accredited online tuition and a final day at the academy. You can equally take these courses without submitting a project for accreditation. However, you will not be able to count these courses towards a postgraduate qualification.

The assessment and accreditation is designed to enable you to demonstrate that you are operating at postgraduate level, and as such have the capability to lead change and innovation in your area of media practice.

You will negotiate the assignment topic with your course tutor, enabling you to fashion the outcomes of your study to suit your needs.

Often an assignment will be a case study or a project from the workplace produced using a variety of media, including written reports, videos, websites, animation or photography.

Far from being all theory-based, these media short courses have been specifically designed with industry to develop higher level skills at postgraduate level alongside specialist knowledge and an understanding of the changing landscape of contemporary media practice.
