Postgraduate Certificate
The National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination (PG Cert) aims to develop students’ understanding of effective leadership in teaching and learning and enhance their abilities to coordinate provision for pupils with special educational needs (SEN) and / or disabilities in their schools.
Students will be encouraged to deepen their understanding of inclusive education through consideration of attitudes, environment, curriculum and resourcing. The course will provide insights into the barriers to learning experienced by children and young people with SEN and / or disabilities in educational settings.
Students will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the policy and legislative context for the provision of education for learners with SEN. Students will be encouraged to recognise their own value positions and to adopt an ethical stance in relation to their practices.
The course explores the significance of issues such as equity and social justice as they relate to the provision of education for disadvantaged learners. Students will be supported to further develop skills relating to analysis, reflection, argumentation and research and thus hone their skills of critical reflection upon professional practice. Students will be supported to refine and extend their capacity to communicate the process and outcomes of their learning to peers and other colleagues.
