Introduction
The Applied Health Studies degree framework is a single honours degree for health and care workers. There is strong emphasis on using work based experiences and learning for academic credit. The programme employs a flexible modular structure to enable students to study at their own pace.
Provision is made at Level 5and Level 6 as students are likely to enter the degree with accreditation of their prior learning.
Aims of the programme
- To provide students and their employers working in health and care settings with coherent opportunities for academic and professional development and updating
- Promote inter-disciplinary, reflective evidence based practice
- Make a positive contribution towards meeting health and care service needs
- Incorporate patient and user centred perspective in the planning and delivery of care
Applied Health Studies degree is made up of smaller awards that can be used as building blocks to the degree. In addition, students have a choice of core modules and undertake a practice based project (dissertation equivalent) to fulfil the requirements to gain 360 points for a full honours degree including 120 points at Level 5 which will largely be satisfied by previous certificated or experiential learning. Smaller awards are frequently offered at both Level 5 and Level 6.

Structure and Timing
Length of study will depend on your final award. Modules are usually taught over 4 study days during a semester (normally over 12 weeks). As a part time student you would be likely to complete four modules per year; enabling the full degree pathway to be completed in a period of up to 5 years.
However, many modules are also delivered on a flexible basis using independent study and work based learning so attendance at University is not required each week.
Teaching and Assessment
Teaching approaches are varied but characterised by a mixture of interactive lectures, peer group work, problem based learning and reflection, and self-directed study. Each module is assessed separately by assignments requiring the application of theory to practice.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should have professional or vocational qualifications or relevant significant voluntary or paid work experience in health, care or a community setting. You must provide evidence of the ability to meet the demands of undergraduate study at an appropriate level.
