I wanted to study for my professional qualification in a classroom environment rather than distance learning...

I wanted to study for my professional qualification in a classroom environment rather than distance learning, as feedback from lecturers and discussion with other students make the whole learning process much easier. The University of Gloucestershire is the only place that is local for me and offers the courses I want to do at a time that is convenient for me.
Passing my exams has been the high point of my time so far, particularly with the computer-based Certificate in Business Accounting.  It’s great to be able to take the exam at the university and get your result immediately.
I’ve enjoyed the chance to meet other students training for the same qualification but often working in very different environments. It helps my understanding of what we’re learning in lectures when I talk to other students and discuss how it is relevant to our jobs.
Besides the obvious benefit of gaining a professional qualification, I’ve really enjoyed meeting lots of fellow accountants from all around the county. We often chat about work etc while at university and occasionally meet up socially at weekends. Also, as I started my CIMA training at the age of 44, not having been in a classroom for 26 years, it was nice to prove to myself that I’m still capable of learning new things.
In my opinion, the quality of the teaching staff is by far the most important factor when studying accountancy. All the lecturers at the University of Gloucestershire have been very good and I feel that this has been a great benefit to me, making the whole studying/examination process as painless as possible.
I’ve made a lot of friends at the university.  It’s also worth saying that other facilities such as the library, internet access, S.U. bar and the refectory have been very popular with me and my fellow students.
Gaining an internationally recognised professional qualification opens up a lot of opportunities career-wise, whether I choose to move on to other employers or stay with my current company. By the time I finish my training and become a fully-qualified accountant, the current Head Accountant will be due to retire and my employers are planning for me to step into his job.
