Certificate in Professional Studies (CPS) - Care of the Patient with Diabetes

15 CATS points at Level 2 or 3

Introduction

This University Certificate enables those professionally qualified health staff (RGN, RMN, HV, DN) to improve their caring for people with diabetes. It has been developed collaboratively with West Gloucestershire PCT and is recognised by regional providers.

Aims of the programme

  • to enable the practitioner to develop their practical skills in caring for people with diabetes
  • to facilitate improved decision making in the management of diabetes
  • to enable practitioners to critically evaluate their practice in light of current research and recommendations
  • to increase the ability of practitioners to promote appropriate self care and patient empowerment 

Content

The programme comprises one module (15 CATS points) which can be studied at either level 2 or level 3.

Specific subject areas include anatomy and physiology applied to the disease process, aetiology of diabetes, assessment of the newly diagnosed and on going education, nutritional aspects, blood glucose monitoring, diabetic emergencies, diabetic medication and insulin therapy, the diabetic foot, complications. The emphasis of the programme is to enable practitioners to reflect and develop their current practice.

Progression

Students who successfully complete the Certificate in Care of the Patient with Diabetes will be able to transfer 15 CATS points to the BSc Applied Health Studies Degree programme.

Structure and timing

The certificate is offered during the academic year starting in September with both modules being taught concurrently. Teaching is timetabled on one half day per week.

Approximately 30% of the programme is classroom based. In addition, students are expected to spend time on independent study and related activities in the practice setting.

Teaching and assessment

The teaching and learning approaches include interactive lectures from a range of clinicians, workshops, self directed study, seminars, small group work and experiential learning and reflection. You will be encouraged to contribute to the learning of the group through discussion and reflection.
The modules are assessed by assignments which require you to apply theory to practice and reflect upon your work within a broader framework.

Entry requirements

To study for the certificate students need to demonstrate their ability to study at level 2 or level 3 as appropriate.

For students who have not undertaken Higher Education study for some time, appropriate advice for preparatory activity can be given.

Support

All students will receive support from a tutor on an individual or group basis.
