20 CAT Points at Level 2
Introduction
The purpose of this programme is to enable the previously registered nurse to Return to Practice ( Nursing) with up to date skills and the confidence to maintain safe, effective standards of patient care. The programme is validated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a statutory Return To Practice (RTP) programme for nurses.
The programme is divided equally between theory and clinical practice over a period of three to four months. It will be necessary for the returnee to pass a numeracy test as well as attend a short interview.
Aims of the Programme
The main educational aims of the Return to Practice (Nursing) Award are to provide opportunities:
- To enable the practitioner to return to clinical practice with up-to-date skills and the confidence to maintain safe and effective standards of patient care
- To introduce students to the concept of adult learning and the skills required to produce academic writing
- To acknowledge that nursing practice is evidence based and to reflect this in the content, including developing students’ skills of finding and appraising literature

- Working in the Modern NHS
- Mandatory training, including Basic Life Support, Fire Training, Manual Handing, Safeguarding Adults and Infection Control
- Point of Care and Essential Care Skills
- Data Protection
- Academic Skills
The course will provide students with 200 hours of learning and teaching activity divided as follows:
- Staff contact = 80 hours
- Self-directed learning = 40 hours
- Clinical practice = 80 hours
Entry Requirements
Evidence of registration with the NMC/UKCC which has lapsed for more than three years.
