DMS (Diploma in Management Studies)

The DMS is a management qualification designed for practising managers, or those aspiring to a career in management in the private and public sectors. It is suitable for those who have successfully completed the Certificate in Management Studies (CMS) or who have a degree and substantial management-related experience.

The Programme

What’s involved?

The DMS builds on the functional areas of management introduced in the Certificate in Management Studies (CMS).  It focuses on the practical application of management at a business unit level, whilst developing your ability to take a cross-functional perspective in order to analyse business problems and decisions effectively.

Why choose this course?

  • Each module of the programme is designed to take your business skills to a higher level and progress your career.
  • It gives you an integrated view of the managerial role across all organisational functions.
  • It represents a ‘fast-track’ route to studying for a postgraduate qualification without prior academic qualifications.
  • It gives you flexibility by offering three pathways of study.

Three pathways of study

Taught
Delivered within a class room environment at the University, this course can be completed within one year on a part time, evening class basis. There is only one intake per year, September.

Work-based learning
This pathway requires you to demonstrate that you are able to meet the learning outcomes of the study modules within your work environment. A specialist advisor/assessor is allocated on a one-to-one, per-module basis, who will support you and agree what evidence is required to show that you have met the learning outcomes. Open for enrolment throughout the year, there is a time limit for achieving the learning outcome in each module.

Blended
Alternatively, you can arrange to take some modules via the taught pathway and others via the work-based learning pathway if this is more suitable.

Our Modules

Management of Resources represents how different functional resources are managed within an organisation in providing a service or product effectively and efficiently to satisfy customer needs and provide a competitive advantage.

Human Resources introduces you to a strategic perspective on the management of human resources in organisations. Models of managing human resources are used to develop HR policies that align with each other and with the strategic objectives of the organisation.

Understanding Strategy aims to provide you with both a theoretical and practical understanding of strategy in the context of environmental and internal conditions and requirements.

The Management Project is the capstone of the DMS programme. It synthesises the prior knowledge and understanding developed throughout the earlier modules on the DMS programme. The focus is upon the rigorous application to a substantial work related problem.

Benefits

  • Theory and assessment relate to the workplace
  • CMS and DMS represent a ‘fast-track’ route to studying for a postgraduate qualification without prior academic qualifications
  • Course targeted at those in the workplace with a number of years experience
