Entrepreneurship in the Film Industry 

Learn how to be enterprising and spot filmmaking opportunities in the digital age!

Course Overview

This course allows you to gain a better understanding of how entrepreneurship operates in the film industry in ways that will enhance your employability. You will gain an insight into the market that will allow you to recognise opportunities as well as learning how negotiate, develop networks, pursue a marketable and innovative creative idea, and understand key aspects to the business start up process.

Multi-Platform Commissions
Learn how to act as a one-stop shop by developing multi-platform content for a broad range of public and private sector clients.

Business Skills
Learn how to deal with different types of clients and attract business through reputational networks.

Business Start Up
Learn the key aspects of identifying a market opportunity, building a business plan to exploit it, and how to set up your own business.

Key Content
Learning will be centred on the latest developments within the film industry and what opportunities are currently available. Content will be based upon actual case studies and discussion of participants’ industry experiences.  The main themes will include:

  • entrepreneurial practices in the film industry
  • opportunity recognition in the film industry
  • building networks and enhancing your reputation within them
  • creating a viable business plan

When, Where and How Much?

This six-week course will commence with a two-day workshop that will take place in Bristol on April 28th / 29th 2012. This will be followed by six weeks of supported online study and a presentation/assessment day on June 16th 2012. The cost of this course will be £800.

Course Delivery

During the two-day workshop, you will explore case studies of business activities as examples of how current opportunities arise and are pursued in the film production sector. You will study along with like-minded media professionals with input from industry practioners and academics lecturers. After the workshop you will have the opportunity to further develop your knowledge with six weeks of supported online study during which you will take part in a variety of online exercises, and participate in discussion forums. Your assessment will consist of producing a viable business plan that you can use to start up your own business or use as a new venture project for your existing company.

On the successful completion of the assessment, you will gain 20 Masters level credits. If you go on to participate in and pass more of our courses you can accrue credit towards a PG Cert (3 courses), a PG Dip (6 courses) and a Masters (dissertation).

The workshop will take place in Bristol, venue to be confirmed.

Entry Requirements

This course is open to media professionals with an undergraduate degree and the required work experience in a relevant industry (normally a minimum of two years); and to non-graduates with
significant and relevant work experience who can demonstrate an ability to both complete and benefit from the course. There are no additional entry requirements for this course.

Tutor

Your course will be delivered by Jeremy Routledge, a producer/director with 15 years of broadcast and film industry experience. Jeremy started Calling The Shots in 1998 and since then has produced work with ITV West, BBC3, BBC4, the UK Film Council and South West Screen.
