Teacher Training Courses

Primary class with some pupils putting their hands up

Our primary and secondary teacher training programmes are awarded consistently high grades by the Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED).

The Department of Education offers a range of initial teacher education (ITE) routes to Qualified Teacher Status. You can choose to study over three years for a BEd Primary Degree, or if you already have a first Degree, you can train to become a primary or secondary teacher by studying our one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

Whichever option you choose, you will have the opportunity to work in two or more schools, so that you can gain invaluable practical experience. We have strong partnerships with over 250 primary schools and 50 secondary schools, and we work closely with them to ensure our programmes are relevant and up-to-date. Head Teachers also advise on course content and training requirements for new teachers. Each school has its own training manager, and you will be supported by a mentor from the school or the University throughout your studies.

School Direct

School Direct offers an exciting opportunity for schools or partnerships of schools to apply for trainee teacher places.

Profile:

Ali PinnockThe subject pathway sessions were particularly good as the course leader not only had many years of experience teaching my subject, but he also ensured we all knew and felt comfortable with all aspects of school life, from parents’ evenings and marking to using outside agencies.

The roots of the Department of Education can be traced back to 1847. We now run our education courses from our attractive Francis Close Hall campus, where our traditional building has been carefully developed to provide modern teaching facilities.
