"I found that there was support on hand all through the course and the tutor’s door was always open for me to discuss my work. "

BA Advertising
I was only interested in joining a creative advertising course that would best prepare me for an industry that is notoriously difficult to get into and University of Gloucestershire had just the course. Its recent graduates had won many awards including  “best stand” at D&AD. At the time, I was working in a mind-erodingly dull office job and decided to attend an Open Day at the university, where the course leader advised me that many former students had gone on to work in the big London agencies, which is where I aspired to be.

The university’s industry-experienced course tutors were a huge attraction - it gave me great confidence to know that I was being put through my paces by people who understood what it took to get into the advertising industry. The work that we submitted was produced as part of the Outdoor Advertising module in the second year. I found that there was support on hand  all through the course and the tutor’s door was always open for me to discuss my work.

Much of the time when I was getting into a creative brief, I was so focussed on the finite points of my idea that it was tough to get perspective on it as a whole. Having the freedom to get creative direction at virtually any time is a great thing. I have gained experience in producing all sorts of advertising for all sorts of brands and formed my own opinions on what really makes good advertising – I’ve found myself critiquing every ad I see! I have been encouraged to approach agencies, make contacts and apply for work experience. Although this can be scary at first, once I had done it I found myself much more confident in applying for jobs later on.

I've had great work experience placements at two direct marketing agencies local to Cheltenham. Getting a taste of real life in advertising was as exhausting as it was exciting. I got a fresh perspective on some of my university work from someone in the industry which was a very useful experience. Highlights of my time here have been winning the Clear Channel Student Design Awards'  sponsor category and coming runner-up in the creative category. After the D&AD exhibition in the summer, I'll be moving to London and doing the rounds at ad agencies - hoping to get a foot in the door!
