Computing 2012 Entry

ComX11 - Wednesday 11th May 2011

Honours Degree

With everything from business to healthcare and leisure relying on computing, it’s hard to imagine the world without it. This programme is about creating computer software on time and to specification, for use in any area of industry or commerce.

During your studies, you will develop technical skills by using industry standard design methodologies, development tools, programming languages, and life skills by presenting your designs, demonstrating your programs, and working as part of a team. No prior experience is assumed, although you must have an aptitude for logical problem solving, and an eagerness to learn new methodologies, tools and languages.

The skills that you gain will equip you to work as a computer programmer anywhere in the public sector (local and national government departments), and in the private sector (manufacturing, distribution, billing and so on). An optional one-year paid industrial placement will provide valuable support for your final year of study, and an excellent foundation for your future career.

"I gained a very good understanding of how to effectively develop software projects."

BSc (Hons) Computing
I felt that the university’s computing course offered the correct balance of theory and practical work, in contrast to other universities I looked at, which leaned too heavily to theory or practical. My choice was influenced by attending one of the open days.
Cheltenham and Gloucester is a great area, not too quiet but not too busy either. Cheltenham and Park Villa in particular is a beautiful place to live and study, with town, the bus station and train station very accessible.
Meeting new people has probably been the best experience of university for me to date, but I’m also really enjoying optional lectures that the university offers, such as a recent one on combating technology related crime.
The course is very well balanced between theory and practical work which I feel is very important for computing, which is a theoretical subject, but equally students need to learn how to apply the theory.
I gained a very good understanding of how to effectively develop software projects, from both the analysis and programming perspectives, as well as experience and confidence programming in several languages.
I’m strongly considering an MSc in Computing after completing my BSc, also at the University of Gloucestershire, then possibly a career at GCHQ.
I’m extremely happy with the University, and very glad I made the decision to come here, and I’m thoroughly looking forwards to my second and third (and possibly fourth) years.
