All of our undergraduate primary initial teacher training courses prepare you well for a career in primary teaching, and your choice of route enables you to graduate with a distinctive set of skills. On this route, you will not only graduate as a qualified teacher, but you will also have the skills to become an outstanding maths subject leader.
The university is a strategic partner for the GLOWMaths Hub, one of 35 UK-based maths hubs. The hub connects mathematics education professionals to develop and spread excellent practice. As a trainee maths specialist, you will have the opportunity to learn from best international practice, for example the England-China project, where teachers from Shanghai have worked alongside local schools to develop a mastery approach to mathematics teaching and learning.
Choosing to study the maths specialism route means training to teach children aged 5 to 11 years with a focus on developing your skills in teaching maths in your second and third years, through university and school-based sessions. Your final year brings together the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths) and you will undertake an action research dissertation exploring children’s learning in maths. Through the course, particular attention will be given to developing your ability to plan creative learning opportunities and to tailor teaching to meet individual needs, with the aim of enabling children to master the primary maths curriculum.
Alongside your maths specialism, you will learn to teach the full range of primary curriculum subjects, also specialising in a foundation subject such as history or art. This will equip you to also pursue a role as a foundation subject leader in your future teaching career.
School placements are a core part of this course. A large proportion of our partner schools are graded Ofsted ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’. This means you will benefit from working alongside teachers of exceptionally high standards.
We provide our students with exceptional support, specialist subject expertise and a network of over 400 schools for first-rate placement opportunities. You will graduate as a fully-qualified teacher with the skills to be outstanding in your career.
You will make a difference to young people, supporting children with individual and diverse needs as well as developing good practice in promoting positive behaviour. You will benefit from excellent workshop and IT facilities including interactive whiteboards, laptops, iPads and digital cameras. You will use industry hardware and software, as used in schools, such as SMART, Prometheum World and Scratch. The software we use changes in line with what schools are using so you will graduate with up-to-date skills.
You will be supported by a university-based personal tutor and a school-based placement mentor. We work closely with our partner schools, where our students often gain their first teaching posts, and our mentors provide excellent guidance. Our student satisfaction ratings are high and we boast high graduate employment rates.
Academic modules are studied through a mix of whole cohort lectures and smaller group workshops and seminars. You will spend a minimum of 120 days in a primary school, putting theory into practice. This will be through blocks of placement weeks throughout the three years of the course. Lectures focus on subject knowledge and pedagogy, and are carefully structured around your developing understanding of practice from placement experiences. The emphasis on professionalism throughout the course prepares you to become an excellent teacher.
Alongside work placements and lectures, you will develop skills through field trips and off-campus activities, exploring creative lesson planning in the locality. A range of additional experiences are available to you during your studies, for example, volunteering in local primary schools, at the Cheltenham Literature Festival and at local school ‘Maths Days’.

You will spend a minimum of 24 weeks in a school or early years setting, starting from the second week of the course. Our network of over 400 schools based in Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Oxfordshire, Bristol, Wales and Swindon means you will have a range of placement experiences, from small village to big city schools and including special educational needs (SEN) settings. School placements are structured progressively – you will begin in groups then pairs and, when your confidence and skills have developed, you will be supported to work as an independent teacher. A large proportion of our partner schools are graded Ofsted Good or Outstanding. This means you will develop your skills to a high standard.
