Education Studies 2012 Entry

Honours Degree

This course gives you a chance to think carefully about the purpose, nature and effects of education.

Changing dramatically in recent times, the nature of education and learning is likely to evolve at an ever-increasing rate.

New theories and ideas about what knowledge is and how people learn, alongside exciting new technologies and increasing globalisation, mean that assumptions about the education system are continually challenged.

You’ll consider how ideas, thoughts and concepts have influenced both past and current practice and might shape future policies. You’ll also analyse the relationship of education with society as a whole.

Our programme supports deep learning and develops skills for life leading to a diverse and growing range of employment options. It also provides opportunities for work-based learning allowing you to explore employment possibilities available and further enhance your professional skills.

With single honours you can take modules from other programmes to develop a subject specialism, or you can combine with another subject to gain a joint honours degree.

"Both students and staff have made it enjoyable for me to join this university – it’s the best decision I’ve made."

Education Studies
Having chosen to move universities after my first year spent studying elsewhere, I came to Gloucestershire in the second year of degree study. I attended one of the Open Days and thought that there was a very friendly and mature vibe, with student ambassadors who were helpful and interesting. After speaking to the head of Education Studies, my mind was made up. The university made it incredibly easy for me to switch and still be at the same point in terms of progress.
There is a range of courses on offer here, with something to interest most people and it’s close not only to town and to the racecourse, but also to the nightlife. Being a new student coming into the second year was daunting but both students and staff were helpful and inviting which enabled my transition to be successful. My course group is small enabling it to be a close-knit group and having a bond with all of the students makes the course a lot less scary and a lot more fun.   We have guest speakers in our lectures and group activities enable us to work together to gain more knowledge.  Once my course has finished, I am hoping to get a place on the PGCE course and become a primary school teacher.
During the course, we have to undertake 160 hours of work experience which can be in any educational environment, ranging from a school, a museum, a special educational needs environment or a summer camp.  I am currently undertaking work experience in a primary school where I help out in a class with reading, lessons and activities. I believe that this will help me to become a successful teacher and as a bonus, I am meeting great people along the way.
I am currently undergoing interviews to work at a summer camp in the USA and I believe that studying on my chosen course, Education Studies, will be a huge benefit. There are lots of opportunities with a degree like Education Studies, including chances to study abroad and get jobs with children in different countries. I hope that my degree will enable me to become a primary school teacher with my aim being to become the head of a school in the future. Both students and staff have made it enjoyable for me to join this university – it’s the best decision I’ve made.
