Adventure leisure and tourism is my main passion in life. I managed outdoor adventure centres before joining academia and I now love being able to teach and research in the subject to share my experiences and understanding with others.

I am fascinated by people's experiences of outdoor adventure activities: how the quality of those experiences is influenced by industry professionals, or how people just get out there, do their own thing and create their own high quality experience; all in nature's own playground that needs sustainable management. This can relate to leisure, tourism, sport, hospitality, consumer behaviour, operational and strategic management; what an exciting mix of subjects to study and research!

Teaching and research

In my leisure and management teaching I like to stimulate thinking and debate about the many alternative perspectives that exist. I encourage my students to develop their critical understanding of theoretical principals applied to real world issues.

My research interest is how the service experience is co-created, consumed and managed in the leisure-related industries, particularly using qualitative approaches to seek deeper meaning and understanding.
