Certificate/University Diploma/Honours Degree Level 3 Top Up
These courses attract health professionals from the NHS, independent and voluntary care sectors and Social Services. The multi-professional approach focuses enabling students to develop clinical practice, based on analysis of current clinical evidence.
Courses provide students working in differing health settings with a range of learning opportunities developing knowledge, understanding and clinical competence while improving academic skills.
The university works closely with local healthcare organisations to identify clinical priorities for the continuing professional development of their staff.
Our flexible courses are delivered through a variety of learning styles, from traditional lectures to e-learning courses. We endeavour to ensure our courses are provided in learning environments where students feel personally supported in their learning.
Courses range from the Certifi cate in Health Care Practice, designed specifically for health care assistants, to courses in Awareness of Cognitive Behavioural Therapies practice and combinations within the top up Applied Health Studies Degree programme for professionals. These include Certificates in Non-Medical Prescribing, Infection Control through to Diplomas in First Contact Care or Palliative Care. We are pleased to offer courses registered with the professional regulatory body, the NMC. These include a Return to Nursing Programme, Specialist Practice Degrees in Health Visiting, District Nursing and School Nursing and the Non-Medical Prescribing courses.

Healthcare Practice (Cert HE)
This year long course has been designed in partnership with the SHA for employed Health Care Assistants who wish to progress to the role of Lead Health Care Practitioner. It includes taught modules on essential care, anatomy and physiology, policy issues and mentoring as well as the development and assessment of competence by workplace mentors.

Career plans

Are there any placements for this course?
Placement may be required for some courses, student will need to satisfy current legislative clearance checks required (eg CRB), and be able to travel independently to placement. While on placement students will be expected to observe the professional policies and procedures of the placement institution, in addition to those of the university.
How will course work be assessed?
This varies greatly from course to course. Assessment of coursework may be through a variety of written assignments, presentations, portfolio developments, competency led portfolios, case-studies, examinations, and OSCE’s. This list is not exhaustive and potential students should check the module descriptor.
Entry requirements
- All applicants will need to provide evidence that they can meet the demands of academic study at a level appropriate to the chosen course
- Applicants for professional courses should be practitioners working in a health care setting who hold a current registration with a UK professional regulatory body and has sufficient experience in that clinical area to support them on their chosen course
- Where supported by their employers, applicants must be able to confirm in writing the authorisation of the appropriate manager(s) or educational leads(s), particularly in relation to payment of fees
