"The lecturers are always very helpful and approachable."

Strategic Events Management (Top Up)

I chose this university as it offers top-up degree courses, which I think is brilliant because it attracts more international students. I did my 2-year Higher Diploma course in Malaysia and I then considered whether to continue my final year degree in Malaysia or to study elsewhere.  Although I wasn’t able to come to an open day, one of the university's representatives came to an educational agency in Malaysia and gave an intoductory talk. I made up my mind right away and here I am now.

I live at The Park campus and I look forward every morning to seeing the view of the ducks on the lake outside my window. The SU Bar is a nice place to hang out and the Refectory is where we sit down and catch up with friends over a cup of hot chocolate.

I think that the Helpzone is a magic place, the staff can help you with all sorts of things from academic queries to personal or welfare issues.  Cheltenham itself is a small, pretty and cosy town and it is great for students. It has a cinema, gym, great shopping area, great pubs and clubs, nice affordable restaurants and also its own leisure complex.   Once in a while, at the weekends, I take day trips to places near Cheltenham such as Bath, Oxford,  Bristol or even London. I don’t get bored easily as there is always something to do.

Having come to the university as an international student, I didn't know anyone when I first arrived.  I am quite a shy person but making new friends and networks from different places has been one of the highlights of my time here.

I like the learning environment although it is very different from where I come from.
Back in Malaysia, we had classes from 8am-5pm everyday and sometimes until 6pm. Here in the university, it is very flexible. I have more time to do research for my assignments and study for my exams. The lecturers are always very helpful and approachable. Each of us is assigned with an Academic Review Tutor. If we have any problems on anything, we can always refer to the person.

I have learned that team-work is important, since in my chosen career, I will be dealing with lots of it. The course has taught me to be more of a critical-thinker and that it is essential to develop ideas from time to time. I have also learned that I have to be confident with whatever I am doing.

I signed up to Salsa Squad at the ‘Freshers Fayre’ when I first came to the university and I have been attending Salsa classes regularly every Thursday at The Park campus. I even joined Salsa Street Dance in the High Street a few nights before Christmas to entertain the late-night shoppers. It was minus three degrees centigrade but a fantastic experience. I have never done anything like that before. I have also done one or two voluntary jobs in Cheltenham.

When I finish my course, I'm hoping to do a little bit of travelling before I start looking for a job. I figure that I probably will not have time to do that once I've started working. I would like to thank everyone who has made my year at the university one of the most memorable times of my life. Cheers!
