Applied Sport and Exercise Studies 2012 Entry

Honours Degree Level 3 Top Up

This programme involves independent work on projects of
your choice. Taught over two days allowing for part-time work.

This course is aimed at students who have completed a HND/Foundation degree in any sport related area. It builds on the opportunities already present for students to gain academic credit for work-based learning and negotiated independent studies in the practice environment. The Faculty of Applied Sciences has a well-developed process for providing placement opportunities for students who do not currently work in the area. They’re co-ordinated by the Sporting CVs initiative, which aims to provide placement opportunities for students in the sport and exercise area, and we have excellent links with a broad range of partners locally who host our placement students.

You’ll be encouraged to carefully consider the knowledge-base upon which your project builds and ensure that your work is evidence informed. Where possible, students work on projects commissioned by external agencies and practitioners.

Our expertise covers the broad areas of sport and exercise including biomechanics, pedagogy, coaching, philosophy, physiology, psychology and sociology.

The current undergraduate student numbers in the broad range of ‘sport and exercise’ programmes exceed 800, and over 500 students are registered for Sports Education and Sports
Development fields. We’re also one of only a small number of institutions to gain British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) endorsement for undergraduate programmes in sport and exercise, and the only university to gain endorsement for three programmes.

"When I started my studies I found the staff were extremely supportive in all aspects of the course."

Applied Sport & Exercise Studies graduate

One of the reasons I chose the University of Gloucestershire was that when I came for the Open Day I was greeted by friendly and welcoming staff. During the tour they told us all about the support services and opportunities outside the University such as work placements.

When I started my studies I found the staff were extremely supportive in all aspects of the course. The style of teaching involved active learning and allowed us to put our points across.  A specific module that I did was learning how to write a CV, fill in application forms and how to be interviewed. This gave me lots of experience and has given me the confidence to go out and get a job.

At Oxstalls there is a programme called SportsCV. This involves the students doing 10 hours of voluntary work and in return the University helps the student to acquire a coaching qualification.

There are dedicated sport days. This is when all the university teams play their fixtures against other universities. Then in the evening, we all got together at a student club and had a great time whatever the results.

As well as being Men’s 2nd Team Captain of the tennis club I was also a committee member, which meant I was able to meet some great people and take part in the running of the club.

I also became a Student Ambassador which involved helping out at the University.  I was able to see the work that went on behind the scenes at recruitment events in order to the make the prospective students leave with a positive attitude.  And I’ve been able to lend a hand during two Freshers weeks, helping the students to settle into university life and making sure they enjoy every minute of their time here.

Having completed the Foundation Degree in Sports Development and Coaching, I did this course as a Level 3 Top Up and I’m now hoping to move into community development which involves giving children in deprived areas the chance to play sport.

I never had a dull moment at university.  There is always something going on throughout the week, whether it’s a Students’ Union event or a student night at the clubs in Cheltenham.  It has helped me become more confident and to set goals in my life. Coming to the University will be the best decision you will ever make.
