Honours Degree

This course has earned a national reputation for developing successful careers, ranging from Sports Development and Health Promotion to Youth Work and Sports Management.

This course helps you understand, question and analyse sport and its role in the community. The course offers a distinctive combination of classroom, practical and industry modules and aims to help students develop a critical understanding of the theory that underpins the field. There is also the opportunity to develop
learning through an extensive range of placements with sport and community organisations.

You could play a role in our unique social enterprise, owned and run by students, which co-ordinates and runs sports development initiatives with partners across the county. You’ll develop excellent intellectual and transferable skills, which will prepare you for employment in this progressive and dynamic field, or for work and life in other related sectors. We promote innovative teaching and learning that creates a positive environment for students, and encourages individuals to develop within and beyond the curriculum.

NOTE: This course offers a number of joint study opportunities. The combination with coaching provides a particularly popular and highly vocationally relevant route.

BA (Hons) Sports Development

The university at all campuses has a friendly, clean and modern environment that I didn’t get at the other institutions I visited. The sports facilities are first class and the lecturers are there to help – not keep their doors closed! If you choose to take them- the opportunities are there to excel in your chosen subject to a very high level.

The interest in my personal aspirations was key to choosing this university, I was not treated as just a number on a register. The facilities and learning environment are some of the best I saw over the number of institutes I visited all over the country. The fact that I came here all the way from Norwich is testament to the impression the open day made on me.

My first year living in halls was the best experience of my life so far. The independence of living on my own and managing of my own learning. This year I successfully managed my first social inclusion project in a deprived area of Cheltenham which was a success with the help of the university and local organisations.

What is impressive is the freedom to develop your own ideas and get credit for them towards your degree. The lecturers are experienced professionals from sport development backgrounds so the learning is as relevant to the working world as it could be. It is also very flexible in that you can choose how practical or theoretical your learning is depending on your strengths.

The expertise from the staff is second to none so I have high aspirations for myself for the future. The life experience and work based experience I have gained so far, and will continue to gain, alongside the academic work I hope will provide me with all I need for the future.

I have enjoyed volunteering in the local community. I have been an active member of the women’s football team and the women’s basketball team since my first year and continue to enjoy a good battle against local universities followed a night out in Cheltenham! The university has given me a stable job as a student ambassador which I really enjoy whilst being able to earn on campus.

I don’t want to leave as I am happy here at the moment! I hope to stay and get a good job in the local community as a development officer of some sort whilst studying for a masters here at Oxstalls.
