Social Work 2012 Entry

Honours Degree

This course has been developed in partnership with employers and users of social care services and is recognised by the General Social Care Council.

Launched in 2003 and revised for the 2007 entry, this degree is now the recognised professional qualification for social workers in the UK, and on successful completion, students are eligible for registration with the General Social Care Council as professionally qualified social workers.

Social workers work with, and provide services for, the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in society. They are employed by a range of statutory, voluntary and private organisations and work in collaboration with colleagues across health services, education, criminal justice and housing.

Social workers can be employed in a variety of employment settings, fieldwork, day and residential care and community development. Current changes in the structure of social care services in the UK are opening up a wide range of employment opportunities for professionally qualified social workers.

Financial Support for Social Work Students

Please note that Social Work students are not eligible for University bursaries. Students who find themselves in financial difficulty can apply to the Access to Learning fund.

The Access to Learning Fund provides additional support for those students who have higher than expected costs or who have unexpected costs or who have unexpected financial difficulties.

The fund aims to support vulnerable students, in particular to help them access and remain in higher education. However, this fund may not be used for the payment of tuition fees and can only be accessed once a student is enrolled.

If you have further questions about the Access to Learning Fund or require more information, please do not hesitate to contact the Student Financial Support Team on 01242 714236 or email bursaryclaims@glos.ac.uk.

As well as the basic Government support available to all new full-time Undergraduate students, Social Work students can also apply for a Social Work Bursary from the NHS.

The Social Work Bursary can be up to £4575 for a 52 week period.

In order to apply you will need to complete an application form, which is available from the NHS Business Services Authority website at http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/Students/825.aspx.
