Sociology 2012 Entry

Honours Degree

Sociology doesn’t just exist in the classroom. It’s with us every minute of every day.

Embedded throughout this course is a focus on the relevance of sociology to the real world and the development of skilled, knowledgeable and highly employable graduates. Students are encouraged from year 1 to consider a range of potential career paths; build a portfolio of experience in work and employment as well as apply their learning to the real world issues that they may encounter outside the classroom.

Whilst you can expect to develop a broad theoretical knowledge on
sociological issues, you will also benefit from a range of guest speakers and practitioners, and actively learn in the field whilst on a variety of field trips. Additionally, our sociology students engage with the necessary IT and computer packages that social scientists can expect to use throughout and beyond their degree.

This course equips you with a powerful understanding of how societies operate, how our cultural assumptions structure all aspects of human social life and how ideas, technologies and cultures shape globalised 21st century societies. You will explore a variety of explanations of the nature of human societies and study the policies and assumptions used in tackling social issues and providing welfare.

The course employs a range of teaching and learning methods, both in and outside the classroom, and as you progress in your studies, you will be encouraged to specialise and pursue your own research interests. The course is taught by an experienced and enthusiastic course team. You may choose to undertake a work placement in the UK, or take some of your study in a European country or the USA.

"I’ve met a great range of people - it was so easy to make new friends here."

BSc Sociology
The presentation of the University really stood out to me. It looked inviting and when I turned up to the open day I was really impressed with the layout and how considerate the lecturers were.  I think the first thing people notice is the appearance of a university and if they feel comfortable with that then they will be more likely to go and try it out.  It really encouraged my desires to go into a Sociology degree.
The fact that the learning centre is open until 2.00am is useful and can really help some students out.  Also, being close to the town centre and the regular social events are an attraction.  I’ve met a great range of people; it was so easy to make new friends here.
I enjoy being able to explore other cultures, identities and views about society.  I’ve always had a passion for finding out about other cultures and I’m really able to learn and understand a lot through this course.  I’ve also developed my research skills and an ability to critically analyse information.  And as the student representative for the Sociology course I’ve been able to get involved in the university by attending meetings such as Faculty Board.
When I graduate I’m hoping to go into retail management.
