Scholarships and Bursaries 

University Awards for September 2010 Entry

The University of Gloucestershire is pleased to be able to reward academic excellence and operates an extensive scholarship programme for all taught students. To be eligible students must be classified as international students and meet the requirements of each award as stipulated below. To ensure that the maximum number of people can benefit from our scholarship programme students can only hold one award. The University also works with external partners to provide additional opportunities for our students.

International Merit Scholarships

The University of Gloucestershire is pleased to offer up to twenty scholarships worth up to 50% of your first year tuition fees. These awards are assessed on the grounds of academic merit and are open to any nationality of student who is an overseas fee payer. The awards are open to undergraduate and postgraduate taught full time students.

If you are interested in applying for one of these awards you will need to complete a scholarship application form. Scholarship applications will only be accepted if:

  • you have already submitted an application to a programme of study at the university, or
  • the scholarship application accompanies a completed application form for a programme of study at the university.

The closing date for applications is Friday 18 June 2010. Please see the terms and conditions.

Note: For successful postgraduate applicants this award supersedes the Postgraduate Academic Bursary.

Postgraduate Academic Bursaries

Academic bursaries worth £1,500 are available for international postgraduate students. Any overseas fee payer who registers for a taught masters degree starting in September 2010, and who has achieved at least a second class upper ( or equivalent ) in their bachelor degree, will automatically receive a reduction of £1,500 towards their tuition fees.

There is no need to apply for these awards, they will be granted automatically on receipt of your academic transcript which confirms you have achieved the required grades.

Note: Successful applicants for other University Awards of greater value do not qualify for this award.

International Merit Scholarship for Human Resource Management

 The International Merit Scholarship for Human Resource Management is a prestigious award for students with an excellent academic background. The Human Resource Management Scholarship is worth £2,000 as a reduction in tuition fees.  It is open to any nationality of student who is an overseas fee payer.

Scholarship Essay Requirements:

Title: How could the study of ‘Human Resource Management and Development’ at the University of Gloucestershire support your career and personal development?

Length: 1,000 words

Comments: Please mark your essay "International Merit Scholarship for HRM"

Submission deadline: Friday 18 June 2010.

The Scholarship Panel will convene in late June and select the strongest essay from the qualifying applicants.

Note: This award supersedes the Postgraduate Academic Bursary.

Alumni bursaries

A 10% reduction will be applied to the fees of any former University of Gloucestershire student who has already successfully completed a qualification with the university and who now wishes to register for a second qualification with us.

Family bursaries

A 10% reduction will be applied to the fees of any student who is:

  • the sibling (brother or sister) of a current or former student
  • the spouse of a current or former student.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship (CSS) Scheme

The University of Gloucestershire participates in the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme.  This scheme is a joint initiative between the UK Department for International Development (DfID) and UK universities to jointly support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK. For September 2010, we have one Shared Scholarship available for students taking the MSc Environmental Policy and Management.

The award 

Scholarship awards made under this scheme are jointly funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) and participating institutions in the UK to jointly support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK.  

The scheme is administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC), whose secretariat is provided by the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Duration of award 

One year  (At the end of the award, candidates are required to return to their home country within two weeks after their course ends). 

What is covered by the award?  Tuition fees, maintenance, return flights, thesis grant, study travel (if required) 
Applicants for the scholarship should be: 

Nationals of (or permanently domiciled in) a Commonwealth developing country, and not currently living or studying in a developed country. 

List of developing Commonwealth countries:

Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bangladesh,
Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Cameroon, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Falkland Islands, Fiji, Gambia, Ghana, Gibraltar, Grenada, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Montserrat, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Pitcairn, St. Helena, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Seychelles *, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Tanzania,Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tristan da Cunha, Turks and Caicos, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, Western Samoa, Zambia, Zimbabwe *  Awards are not presently available to Seychelles or Zimbabwe. DFID no longer funds scholarships to candidates from Bahamas, Brunei Darussalam, Cyprus, Malta and Singapore.

Eligibility 

• CSSS guidelines encourage the selection of nominees with the highest grade.  Candidates are expected to hold a first degree at either first class or upper second class level.

• Candidates must be sufficiently fluent in written and oral English to pursue their studies immediately. The University requires a minimum score of IELTS 6.5 (6.0 in writing) or equivalent for admission to the MSc in Environmental Policy and Management.

Note: Candidates who have already had the opportunity of studying for one year or more in a developed country will not be eligible for an award.  

Candidates must be aware that sponsoring institutions are asked to give priority to candidates under the age of 30, but may give reasons for wishing to make exceptions for older candidates.

Candidates are required to sign and submit with their application an undertaking that they:  • are nationals of a developing country
• are permanently domiciled in a developing Commonwealth country, and are not at present living or studying in a developed country
• have not undertaken studies lasting one year or more in a developed country
• are not at present employed by a National Government or a parastatal organisation (University and Polytechnic employees are exempted from this restriction)
• are themselves, or through their family, unable to pay to study in the United Kingdom and
• will return to their home country as soon as the award ends.

• CSSS Scholarship
To apply for the CSSS scholarship, candidates are requested to write on the front of the Postgraduate application form:   Commonwealth Shared Scholarship application.  Applicants will then need to complete two CSSS forms (SSS Application Form and Candidate Declaration).

Please ensure that the required CSSS forms (the two forms above) are completed and accompany your postgraduate application.

Candidate's academic certificates/transcripts  The university will require original copies of certificates/transcripts for the candidate who is selected for the award, or notorised copies. These will be returned upon verification.
