Pauls To Pull In A Crowd

Paul Dunmall and Paul Rogers

Xposed Club – University of Gloucestershire, Media Atrium, Pittville Studios, Albert Road, Cheltenham, GL52 3JG. Friday 27 February 2009, 8pm.

Music lovers are in for a treat with one of Europe’s finest bassists, Paul Rogers and one of the most talented reed players on the international scene, Paul Dunmall, set to duet at the next Xposed Club. The night will also see The Beatrix Ward-Fernandez Trio take to the stage to provide their blend of experimental electronica.

Being seen as one of the most distinctive improvisers playing today, Paul Dunmall has developed a reputation for being uncompromising and talented. Having toured with his Moksha big band, Alice Coltrane and with Johnny Guitar Watson he retuned to the UK to work alongside a number of artists and bands including Keith Tippett and Tony Levin. In 2003 he fulfilled his long time dream of playing a freely improvised saxophone in a full orchestral piece written by Brian Irvine, commissioned by the BBC. Paul has gone on to set up his own music label called Duns Limited Edition and has to date had 52 releases.

Having picked up his first bass guitar at the age of 14, Paul Rogers has become known for his long-standing tenure in the free improve quartet Mujician. Paul has played with a number of artists. Such as Mike Westbrook, Elton Dean, Alan Skidmore and Tony Levin, He also improvised with members of the Spontaneous Music Ensemble. In 1989 his recording career took off with Elton Dean's Unlimited Saxophone Company, Jon Lloyd's Syzygy and a tour with drummer Pip Pyle's group Equip'Out. From 1992 he has release a number of solo albums and has also had recent success with Parisian jazzmen like Louis Sclavis and Ramon Lopez.

The night will also see the Beatrix Ward-Fernandez trio take to the stage. Consisting of Beatrix Ward-Fernandez, Charlie Collins and Derek Shaw the group are known for playing experimental alternative electronica. Delivered by a Moog Etherwave pro Theremin combined with both percussion and the horn, the band engages in curiously interesting forms of music.

Event organiser and senior lecturer Stuart Wilding said: “This will be a very special night’s music the two Pauls are both outstanding musicians that together create powerfully beautiful music. This on its own is worth the entrance money but with the B W-F Trio able to create genre crossing Theremin led “avant-garde Sousa marching, alien communicating soundscapes” we have a gig not to be missed!”
