University student wins top prize at media awards

​University of Gloucestershire Journalism student, Hesham Abdelhamid, won Student of the Year last night (10 April), at the Midlands Media Student Awards in Birmingham.

Hesh, who co-founded the e-magazine Farid, also won the features category at the annual awards, which celebrate the work of journalism students from universities across the Midlands.

His classmate Ellie Kirwin-Jones was also nominated in the features category, while BA Sports Journalism graduate Adam Micklewright, who now works for Premier League club Fulham, was nominated in the sport section.

The awards, organised by Birmingham Press Club to acknowledge the achievements of next-generation journalists, broadcasters and photographers, attracted several hundred entries from universities and colleges from the East and West Midlands.

The judges likened Hesh’s work to what they would expect from a “seasoned journalist working in the profession for years.”

University of Gloucestershire journalism student, Hesham Abdelhamid, said:

“I am so thankful to the Birmingham Press Club for recognising the work of students – we all work very hard to make a name for ourselves and create work to the best of our abilities. To have an institution reward us for our job is just the cherry on top and it proves that hard work does pay off.”

 

University of Gloucestershire journalism course leader, Paul Wiltshire, said:

“We are incredibly proud of Hesh. His work ethic is phenomenal and he has a real flair for design, for confident writing, for social media and for SEO. He’s also a wonderful team player, and he has made it his mission to use Farid to develop other students’ skills.”
