Acclaimed cricketer and coach Andy Flower receives Honorary Award

Acclaimed cricket coach and former Zimbabwe international player Andy Flower OBE has received an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Gloucestershire.

The Technical Director of Elite Coaching for the English Cricket Board mentors and supports developing coaching talent, including students at the University of Gloucestershire. Andy also delivers guest lectures at the university and supports coaches with their continuing professional development following graduation.

Andy is being awarded an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of his outstanding contribution to cricket and coaching. Today (4 November) he joined hundreds of students to receive his award at Gloucester Cathedral.

He received his award from Dr Anita Navin, Head of the School of Sport at Exercise, who said: “Andy clearly has a strong desire to make a difference and someone who has a tremendous spirit to inspire others in the game and across sport. Andy is a worthy recipient of this Honorary Doctorate and the University are thrilled to offer this award to an inspirational individual.
In his international debut for Zimbabwe he once recorded 550 runs in a test match against India and is one of the few players to have scored a century in a one day international. After ten years playing for Zimbabwe he moved to continue his professional playing career with Essex County Cricket Club, before then becoming Technical Director for the England Cricket Team.

He received an OBE for Services to Sport in the 2011 birthday honours and won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards in the same year.

Receiving his award, Andy said: “”I am delighted to receive such an award from the University, and very grateful for the opportunity to be here today.”
