Cathedral Lecture explores how women were erased from the Bible

​Popular speaker and theologian, Dr Paula Gooder presents this year’s Michael Perham University Cathedral Lecture: ‘A woman’s place? Imagining and re-imagining the women in the New Testament’, on Tuesday 5 June.

Held at Gloucester Cathedral, Dr Gooder will look at how heavily male dominated the Bible is and how easy it is to imagine women out of the story entirely. However there are a few occasions when female perspectives or stories about women are hinted at in the text. The lecture will look at these examples and imagine the few women who were there out of the text, and explore the impact on the stories when we put them back in.

Dr Paula Gooder is the Director for Mission and Development in the Birmingham Diocese and a Reader in the Church of England. A former Theologian in Residence for the Bible Society, writer and a visiting lecturer she is passionate about igniting enthusiasm for reading The Bible today and making scholarship accessible.

The lecture, named after the former Bishop of Gloucester, Michael Perham, who introduced the event between the University of Gloucestershire and Gloucester Cathedral is a key part of the University Festival. The Festival showcases the talents and achievements of staff and students throughout the academic year, and previous speakers include Alister McGrath and Baroness Julia Neuberger.

Admission to the lecture is free, but tickets need to be reserved in advance (link removed as event has finished). The talk is from 7pm at Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucester, 5 June, with refreshments available at the Chapter House from 6:15pm.
