Chancellor of the Exchequer opens University of Gloucestershire’s new Business School and Growth Hub building

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Rt Hon Philip Hammond MP, visited the University of Gloucestershire today (7 February) to officially open the new Business School and Growth Hub building at the Oxstalls campus in Gloucester.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond said:

“Investing in skills is the key to boosting our productivity and helping the economy grow and thrive.

“That’s why we’ve invested £5m into this new School of Business and Technology – to bring together academic and business expertise and ensure the students here today develop the skills they need to become the business leaders of the future.”

The landmark £20 million building represents the achievement of a long-held ambition for the University.  It accommodates not just the staff and students of the Business School but also all of the University’s support services for business, the GFirst Local Enterprise Partnership, and the University’s award-winning Growth Hub formed in partnership with GFirst LEP.  The University’s goal is to bring together, for their mutual benefit, students studying business, staff teaching and researching business, and business people using Growth Hub services.  The students will benefit through regular contact with business partners, gaining insight and experience about the realities of modern business.  And business partners will benefit by being able to contribute to developing the employability and business insight of graduates starting out on their business careers.

The building was supported by £5 million of Local Growth funding allocated through GFirst LEP, which also supported the initial creation of the Growth Hub.

The new building features a business incubation centre, Thompson Reuters trading room, a moot courtroom, a lecture theatre and seminar rooms designed to support best practice in modern teaching and learning, and extensive social learning spaces.

The new Business School and Growth Hub building is the cornerstone of the University’s recent investments at its campuses in Gloucester and Cheltenham designed to provide modern, fit for purpose facilities offering a high quality environment for teaching and learning. This has included two new all-weather sports pitches and a 700 seater sports arena for both University and community use in Gloucester, the creation of purpose built, high quality student accommodation in Gloucester City centre and at the Pittville Student Village in Cheltenham, a new Design Centre and enhanced, industry-standard facilities for media courses at the Park campus in Cheltenham.  These investments will ensure that the University can continue to offer an excellent experience for our students, combining attractive facilities with high student satisfaction and good employment outcomes.

University of Gloucestershire Vice-Chancellor, Stephen Marston, said: “Today’s formal opening by the Chancellor of the Exchequer of our wonderful new Business School and Growth Hub marks a major milestone for the University.  We want our Business School to be distinctive for the real-life, hands-on experience of business that we offer to our students, so that we give them the best possible preparation for successful business careers.  By collocating our business students, business staff and all of our business services, we are creating an exceptional environment in which students, staff, business clients and business partners can all work together for mutual benefit.

“The University of Gloucestershire is committed to playing our part in promoting the economic success of the UK, by developing skilled business leaders and managers, and supporting businesses to innovate and grow.  This new building is where it will happen.”

GFirst LEP Chief Executive, David Owen, said: “This is an important project for the future of the county. It expands our successful Growth Hub model that is driving business growth in Gloucestershire and gives Business School students the opportunity to see first-hand how businesses are run, managed and supported in the county. This is a first in the country – a University Business School, a Growth Hub and a Local Enterprise Partnership all under one roof”.
