Exploring Gloucestershire’s black history

Exploring the black history of the county is at the heart of the latest public lecture at the University of Gloucestershire.

Acclaimed author and historian, Dr Madge Dresser, will be taking the stage at the Francis Close Hall campus in Cheltenham to present her lecture, Exploring Black History: Gloucestershire on Wednesday October 26. The free event is in celebration of Black History Month and organised together with Black History Month Cheltenham, a partnership between Cheltenham Borough Council, the African Community Foundation, and Cheltenham West End Partnership.

Dr Dresser, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, has been involved in a wide range of BBC television and radio programmes, and has spoken at venues including Tate Britain and Bristol’s Watershed. Her publications include Slavery and West Country Houses, and Women in Bristol, 1373-1660.

The event will be introduced by Dr Christian O’Connell, author and senior lecturer in American History at the University, who said: “We are delighted to welcome such a leading authority on the identity, role and experiences of ethnic and religious minorities in society.”
