Film students win big at Royal Television Society awards

​University students took home the top prizes at the Royal Television Society (RTS) West of England Student Awards last night (Tuesday 12 February) at the Everyman Cinema in Bristol. 

The Film Production students won the top awards in Factual for ‘Memories of Mother’ and Comedy & Entertainment for ‘Delicious Love’. Additionally, the students won several Craft Awards for camerawork, sound, editing, production design and directing. Popular Music graduate Demi Marriner was also awarded ‘Best Composition’ for her work on ‘Dearly Departed’. 

The RTS West of England Student Awards celebrate the best student talent in the region, and this year received the highest ever number of entries. This is the 24th year of the RTS Student Television Awards, which recognise the best audiovisual work created by students at undergraduate and postgraduate level, demonstrating strong storytelling, innovation, outstanding visual and aural creativity with high quality craft skills. 

University Film Production Course Leader, Mike Parker, said:

“I was so proud to see our students and recent graduates winning awards in so many categories. It was wonderful to see their hard work rewarded by the industry. It was a particularly pleasing to win so many craft awards which is a real credit to the strength and breadth of teaching across the course.”

University Head of School of Media for the, Anne Dawson, said:

“We are really thrilled to have won so many awards at this prestigious event and to have two winners through to the National Finals. The School of Media was up against the top universities in the region, and to win so many Craft Awards is testament to the very high level teaching and support our students receive. We are very proud of all our students and delighted to have our fantastic courses recognised like this.”

The winning films from each RTS Centres’ Student Television Awards will then be judged at the UK national finals in April 2019.
