Music industry passion wins student award

University of Gloucestershire student Lauren Geary has won the Chartered Management Institute Harmsworth Award.

The award is given to the student on the Music and Media Management course who achieves the highest dissertation mark on a media management topic.

Lauren is from Royal Leamington Spa and since leaving university has spent the summer working within the artist liaison and PR teams at various festivals around the country. She received her award yesterday during her graduation ceremony at The Centaur, Cheltenham.

She said: “A lot of the year’s energy went into completing my dissertation, which is the most challenging piece of work I’ve ever done, but the piece that I am most proud of. I managed to get some great contacts to take part in my research including Warner Music Group, the third largest record label in the world, who are now using my results for their own research.”

And Lauren was delighted to receive the award: “I have been very pleasantly surprised. I was happy enough with a First Class Honours Degree, but this award is the cherry on the top.”

Lauren is currently undertaking management training at Boots as an assistant manager, and is also a new music reviewer for GIGSoup, a new music blog.

She added: “The thing that I enjoyed most about my time at the University was definitely the people I met. Whether it was fellow students or lecturers, it was incredibly inspiring and rewarding to be around so many creative people at once. To combine those people with a subject such as Music Management that I was so passionate about was invaluable, I have made absolute friends for life, both within and outside of my course, and my lecturers set me up with some great opportunities, such as key industry contacts and festival work, that I have been able to really take advantage of, expand upon and start carving a career path from.”
