Stop the Heartbreak hosts third annual coffee morning

The Stop the Heartbreak campaign, supported by the University of Gloucestershire and The Citizen newspaper, has celebrated its third annual fundraising coffee morning at the Royal Oak pub in Prestbury today (Friday 1 July).

The campaign aims to raise money to provide people aged between 14 and 35 vital heart screening to detect any abnormalities, and potentially save lives. Every week at least 12 young people die from undetected heart conditions in the UK. Money raised helps to provide free screening in partnership with the Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) charity. The CRY Mobile Cardiac Screening Service is £5,000 a day, and can screen up to 100 people a day.

The event raised more than £161 through donations for the coffee and cakes and sales of items including bread, as well as a raffle.

Diane Crone, Professor of Exercise Science at the University of Gloucestershire, has been leading the campaign since its launch in 2013. Diane said: “I would like to thank everyone who came to the coffee morning and helped us raise money for cardiac screening of young people in Gloucestershire. It was a great excuse for people to catch up and eat cake. I’m also very grateful to all those who baked for us and of course the Royal Oak in Prestbury for hosting the event. The money raised will go towards providing vital screening for young people in the county.”
