University of Gloucestershire to start offering nursing degrees

The University of Gloucestershire will introduce a nursing degree programme from 2017. The project is in partnership with Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, 2gether NHS Foundation Trust, Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust and Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning group. The county currently needs approximately 450 new nurses a year to keep up with the demand and the trusts services are experiencing a shortage of nurses in the area. Stephen Marston, vice-chancellor of the University of Gloucestershire, said: “Given the challenges faced by our local health service in recruiting sufficient nurses to meet the needs of the county, introducing a BSc in Nursing programme is the logical next step.”

The university already provides training for nursing in non-medical prescribing and also a higher education apprenticeship programme in healthcare assistants therefore a new nursing degree will only expand and complement what is already provided.
