Information Technology with Computing, 2006 Steve Williams

During my time at University of Gloucestershire I studied IT with Computing which by any means isn't the most glamorous course on paper. However, through a diverse range of subjects and classes the course was kept surprisingly interesting and allowed me to excel in areas I had never come across before.

I graduated in 2006 with 2:1 Hons and set about looking for work. In my opinion all I wanted to do was get my foot in the door of an IT company and grow from there. I was fortunate enough to be offered a testing position at a company in my hometown Milton Keynes. The job was just as I wanted, a foot in the door of a small IT company with room to develop and grow.

After 18 months of grind in the development team I was offered a position of Junior Consultant in the client services arena, with the promise of travel and client facing work ahead of me. This was what I had always wanted to do and with being a very sociable guy and this suited me no end.

Since then I have worked my way up to Senior Consultant and am highly respected throughout my company. I have had the privilege of working with major clients such as H&M and NEXT and I have even been transferred to the US to work with our North American operation. I am currently writing this email from a Chicago office where I am the lead consultant on a project with the biggest retail company in the world, Walmart.

All of this has been made possible by the University of Gloucestershire. In all honesty I never worked particularly hard at school but university gave me a fresh perspective and provided me with the drive to be where I am today.

Many people believe that there aren't many jobs out there and that given the current economy you can't succeed in the workplace. Whilst it is more difficult, it is most definitely achievable through hard work and confidence in your own ability.
