PhD, Sport Health and Social Care
'I studied the taught postgraduate programme Physical Activity and Health Development at the University and, after graduating in 2007, the faculty advertised a PhD position in the field of physical activity. It seemed like a good excuse to take on a challenge and I was encouraged to apply by faculty staff. I was fortunate enough to be awarded funding from the University and Active Gloucestershire alongside another candidate and started my research in September 2007.
'The title of my research is ‘Collaboration in the context of community networks for sport and physical activity: an investigation of stakeholder perceptions’. I’m focusing on local sports networks, specifically those used to bring together representatives from local authorities, Primary Care Trusts, schools, volunteer groups and a variety of other agencies. I’m particularly interested in developing community initiatives to increase participation in sport and physical activity with the aim to develop a better understanding of the processes involved. A nationwide survey of local sports networks together with a local case study will provide evidence to support partnerships working in this field.
'Physical activity represents a significant aspect of the current health agenda and there are many research and professional opportunities to explore. In addition to my own research I have been involved with both practice-based research with a local authority and publications aimed at professional audiences. This has given a useful insight into the links between research and practice but more importantly it has generated some additional income!
'It’s been really useful to become more involved with external project-based work alongside my main research and to be able to take advantage of opportunities to network with potential employers. I’m keen to stay in the health or physical activity field though I’ve not yet decided in what capacity.'
