"My year at the Cathedral, attending the services and living among the Cathedral community has made my approach to the subjects more honest. I felt a bit like a charlatan before because although I have been inspired by religious iconography I didn't really have a good understanding of what had inspired the original works.
"The subject-matter of my work has remained the same, but my enjoyment has been rejuvenated.
"The best thing about the residency is that it has informed my practice. There is a sense of community here and everyone has been very supportive, both personally and professionally.
"Also, I think that more than anything, the
opportunity to develop your practice, informed by diverse audiences and without the constraints, commitments and pressures of the gallery, allows for truly worthwhile and informative artistic development and research. Time to reflect on your practice and fully immerse yourself within it, is a rare commodity in the often fast paced contemporary art world.
"I hope the artist-in-residence programme continues for many years to come."
