The Words to Say It
Media: latex flooring, video projection, elevated wooden walkway
Location: Crypt
“In the bowels of the earth beneath the present day cathedral lies Gloucester’s Norman crypt, the oldest part of the building dating from around 1090. Later abandoned as a place of regular worship due to flooding, today water still sits around the bases of the pillars in the silent central chamber. The damp atmosphere of this fluid nascent environment acts as a counterpoint to the main body of the building above – with its ritual words whispered, spoken, broadcast or sung but always carefully chosen – turning your gaze down and your thoughts back to beginnings.”
"For me the Residency was a time to breath, to focus, to take a longer view, and to dedicate myself fully to one place. It was an inspiration. I think its relevance increases year on year, a catalyst for reflection inspired by a building with an anachronistic sense of time and place."

I fashioned the hair from my head (collected during the residency year) into a hollow sphere. This ball was then blown once around the cloisters.
