Case Study 9 - Cheltenham Neighbourhood Projects

Students and staff in the department of natural and social sciences have undertaken various outreach initiatives in Gloucestershire's communities:

As a result of student field trips to Neighbourhood Projects covering Hesters Way, Whaddon and Cheltenham's West End, a number of students have volunteered for these initiatives and - in the process of gaining valuable work and life experience - been able to reflect on their experiences and gain academic credit through Volunteering modules, Independent Studies and dissertations.

Students have completed community assessments for rural communities through Gloucestershire Rural Community Council (GRCC) and the GRCC has now employed graduate Thom Davis on a full-time contract; similarly graduate Celia Wear works as a Community Development Worker for the Hesters Way Partnership. On the staff side James Derounian is now a Director of Cheltenham's West End Partnership - helping to foster regeneration of the Lower High Street and related areas.
