Here at the Department of Sport and Exercise we believe that students can gain superb learning opportunities by engaging in local community projects.
By understanding the challenges faced by schools, sports clubs, outreach projects and community initiatives, students can really get to grips with their subject and understand how it applies to the real world.
Engaging with community projects also supports employability, as students develop industry specific skills as well as additional qualifications like National Governing Body awards. In addition to enjoying placements and community based modules, many students also volunteer with the same community agencies – often through our own dedicated volunteering programme, SportsCVs.
At the same time, taking the resources of the University – and the tradition of Blue and Blue Sport – into the community can help local people improve their sport and make the most of higher education. We hope to make a genuine impact through our community engagement work to make sure that both Oxstalls and the Department are at the centre of the local sporting landscape.
We work with our partners – including the local authorities, the School Sports Partnerships, Cheltenham Town Football Club, Gloucester Rugby Club, Leeds Rhinos, Cheltenham Tigers, Hucclecote Netball and Cheltenham Hockey Club – to provide these opportunities. We also host our own outreach programmes including Onside, No Limits, SportsCVs and Sport Malawi.
