Degree Show 2012

Onside

Programme Type: Outreach Project

Onside aims to use football as a tool for social inclusion in deprived neighbourhoods in Cheltenham and Gloucester.  It’s an innovative partnership between the The Football Foundation, the University of Gloucestershire, Cheltenham Town FC, Gloucester City FC, the Gloucestershire FA, Cheltenham Borough Council and Gloucester City Council.

Using new (and perhaps very old) forms of the sport like street football, freestyling and futsal, Onside aims to give new opportunities to young people who are either unable to access regular sport or physical activity, or who have dropped out of such activity because of a lack of support, transport, coaching or encouragement.

Onside is managed by Jim Hart, who is also the coach of the University’s Men’s First Team and a major contributor to the football development in the locality. Jim offers students opportunities to get involved in Onside through coaching or development placements, through SportsCVs or through paid opportunities. A number of modules on our degrees at Foundation, Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels connect directly with the project, assisting with event management, community consultations or evaluations.
